WOMEN'S WORLD TEAM FINISHES SEVENTH IN DALIAN

Squash history was made as China hosted its first World Squash Championship – and the first ever to stage all matches on all-glass courts – when teams from the five continents competed in the 21st CGG WSF Women’s World Team Championship in the Liaoning Province seaport city of Dalian. With 15 players from the world top 20 amongst the 62 representing 16 nations, the biennial WSF event took place at the Xigang Gymnasium – featuring two all-glass showcourts, with arena seating, plus four permanent all-glass courts – from 11-16 September.

Canada was guaranteed a top 8 finish when Hollie Naughton and Danielle Letourneau secured victories over a strong Australian Team. Graeme Williams, the Coach for the World Women's Team, had this to say after the match:

“The top eight has been the target for the last two world teams. Being seeded eight adds a little bit of pressure because we’re expected to do that. We haven’t done it for an awfully long time. In the past we’ve been seeded outside the top eight so it’s a different kind of pressure to be favoured to get there.

“It still feels amazing to have got the job done – and now it’s just a matter of how high can we finish!”

In the next two rounds, Canada had two tough losses to England and Malaysia. However, they managed to come back strong on the final day against the New Zealand Team as Nikki Todd defeated Abbie Palmer 3-1, and Samantha Cornett defeated Amanda Landers-Murphy 3-1.

Canada's win over New Zealand earned them seventh place – the highest achievement the Canadian Women's Team has had since 2000! Congratulations to the team on an extremely succesful performance, and thank you for representing our country so well!
