The team fought well, we had great team spirit as usual, and we leave the championship hungry for more. The venue at Squash On Fire was spectacular and the organization perfect, and the team can go into the festive season happy with their efforts." - Martin Heath, Squash Canada High Performance Director and World Men's Team Coach

Ottawa, ON (December 13, 2019) -- The 2019 WSF Men’s World Squash Team Championships are fast approaching, and four of Canada’s best are preparing to compete against world’s top squash players from 23 different nations. For the first time in history, the 2019 Championships will take place in the United States of America, in the nation’s capital of Washington, DC from December 15-21, 2019.

The historic event dates back to 1967, when countries all over the world sent their strongest male players for an international showdown in Australia. Since then, the tournament has maintained its core purpose and traditions, taking place bi-annually and switching venues with each event.

Team Canada consists of: Nick Sachvie, Shawn Delierre, Mike McCue, and David Baillargeon.

Nick Sachvie, from St. Catharines, ON is currently ranked #107 in the PSA world rankings, and is Canada’s most recent national champion, winning the 2019 event and capturing his second title in three years. Nick represented Canada at the 2019 Pan Am Games, in Lima, Peru, over the summer, where he earned a Silver medal in Men’s Doubles, and a Bronze medal in the Men’s Team event.

Shawn Delierre is a veteran of the Canadian squash scene, and currently our highest ranked in the Men’s PSA World Rankings at #82. The Montreal, QC native has represented Canada at many team competitions over the years, including several Pan Am Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Men’s Team Championships. He recently finished in 2nd place at the 2019 Canadian Men’s Championship.

Mike McCue, the Sudbury, ON native follows close behind in the world rankings at #92 and has had a successful PSA season thus far. He recently won the 2019 Kiva Club Open and was runner-up at the 2019 Securian Open and 2019 Wakefield PSA Open. This will be Mike’s second World Men’s Team Championships, having represented Canada at the 2017 event in Marseille, France.

David Baillargeon is only newcomer to the event, but will be a great asset to the team, sitting at a world ranking of #106. He has represented Canada alongside Shawn Delierre at the World Doubles Squash Championships, in Manchester, England. He also finished 5th at the 2019 Canadian Men’s Open and won the 2017 Canadian University and College Squash Championships.

The team will be led by Head Coach, Martin Heath, who has supported our Canadian athletes through the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru, and the 2018 Pan American Squash Championships in Cayman Islands. Martin reached #4 in the PSA World Rankings during time as professional squash player and was named National Squash Coach of the Year by the US Olympic Committee in 2010.

Tim Marshall, Team Canada’s Physiotherapist, will be ensuring Nick, Shawn, Mike and David are able to perform at their best. He has been accompanying our Canadian athletes through many team events over the years.

Team Canada is seeded 15th and will begin the 2019 WSF Men’s World Squash Team Championships in Pool A. Joining Canada is top seed and reigning champion, Team Egypt, along with 12th seed, Switzerland.
