2018-12-12

OTTAWA, ON, December 12, 2018 – History was made at the 2018 Canadian Junior Open that was held from December 8-11, 2018 at The Club at White Oaks in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.  Over 300 players from 16 countries competed in over 600 matches during the four-day annual event.

The highlight of the event was Canada’s Maria Min of Vancouver, British Columbia who won the Girls Under 13 category over fellow Canadian Shirin Batra of Oakville, Ontario by scores of 3-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-8.  Min who was seeded number one after a strong 4th place finish in 2017 was determined to bring home the title.  “I would like to thank Squash Canada for hosting such an amazing tournament” said Min.  “I also would like to thank my coaches (Richard Yendell, Safaraz Ahmed), my training partners, my family, Squash BC and my sponsor Harrow for supporting me.  I really enjoyed playing this tournament and I enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people across Canada and around the world who share a love of squash.”

Another highlight is the strong finish for many of our athletes.  Canadian athletes brought home a total of 12 medals and has put the rest of the world on notice that Canada boasts a strong junior squash system.  It should be noted this was the strongest international field in the events history.  For a complete list of results please visit: https://clublocker.com/tournaments/9914/info.

“We witnessed such a high level of squash by these talented young players”, said Dan Wolfenden, Squash Canada Executive Director.  “With the introduction of live scoring via Club Locker, a well-organized event team and the White Oaks Resort’s traditional hospitality, we have raised the bar for a positive player and family experience.  We
look forward to building on that for an even bigger and better event in 2019.”

In closing Tournament Director Matt Easingwood stated, “This was our biggest Canadian Junior Open this year and the teams at White Oaks and Squash Canada came together and provided a superb event.  The new Club Locker system of live scoring worked very well, allowing players to check their court from anywhere.  The Squash Canada Officials were great, working long hours and adapting to the new tablets used instead of paper scoresheets.  Thank you, all my team of volunteers at White Oaks, Cindy Sachvie and the maintenance department for getting the courts in top shape for the event.  Thank you to Dan Wolfenden for his vision on improving the event and Geoffrey Johnson for his technical assistance and expertise.  Squashstream.tv was also very popular with Josh Ginou providing excellent live streaming.  Finally, thank you to Fred Reid from Black Knight for their support of the event”.
