Eindhoven (NLD) – The last day of the Individual event took place at the WSF World Juniors yesterday. Chloe Chemtob had made it to the Plate Final and was taking on Belgian Tinne Gilis. See how she did in Team Manager, Janet MacLeod’s write up:

“The last day of the individual tournament and still more amazing squash to be played, including Canada’s Chloe Chemtob!

Chloe had Canada’s only match of the day, the Individual Plate Final, and it was a thriller against the higher seed, Tinne Gilis of Belgium.  The first game was incredibly close with both girls fighting hard for control of the T. Both athletes traded game balls in this game, with Belgium narrowly getting this game 13-11.  Chloe came out storming in the second and had Tinne moving into every open space Chloe could find. Chloe won this game 11-7. Not to be outdone, Tinne proved tough in the third and forced Chloe to perhaps go for more shots causing a few errors to sway the score in Tinne’s favour 11-8.  However, being the very tough competitor she is, Chloe never gave up and played some incredible squash in the fourth with long rallies and tight shots and controlling the T and running everything down. Chloe took the fourth 11-7.

Now even, at 2-2, the match was just getting started. Chloe game out gunning early, but Tinne held her ground and her touch at the front seemed to do no wrong. Chloe played some incredible squash – great gets, attacking volleys and perfect lengths and widths, but Tinne proved to be the winner this day as she won the 5th 11-6.  Well done Chloe, you made all Canadian squash players proud!!

We also say goodbye to Tara Shannon, as she makes her circuitous way back to Canada. Her squash improved so much and she has added such great energy and spirit to our time here. We wish her well and will miss her.

Team Championships and Round Robin play gets underway today, Friday July 31. Canada is seeded 8th in the tournament and will be working very hard to prove that seeding wrong.  Within our pool, Pool A, are the top seeds in the tournament; Egypt, the 9th seed; Switzerland and the 13/16 seed; South Africa.

Our first team match will be Friday against the South Africans at 2:30pm local time. Chloe will have a much needed rest this day, so up first will be Grace Thomas, then Maddie O’Connor to follow and Sophie Mehta will finish out the match play today.  Canada’s most important match in the pool play will come tomorrow against the closely ranked Swiss.  This match will be played at 12:30pm local time. It is a must win for us and we are confident that our good old Canadian Cheddar can put some holes in their Swiss cheese!!

    Stay tuned….”

UPDATE: Canada took on South Africa this morning and defeated the 13/15 seed 3-0, with Grace, Maddie and Sophie all winning their matches. Canada will be in tough tomorrow against Switzerland. Those interested can catch the live scoring at:
