2020-06-24

Ottawa, ON (June 24, 2020) -- Squash Canada is proud to announce that Lisa Henderson of Red Deer, Alberta has been elected to the Board of Directors in the role of Director-at-Large at the Annual General Meeting held Saturday June 20, 2020.

A successful leader in the Alberta squash community, Lisa brings a vast array of volunteer experience to Squash Canada as a former Squash Alberta Board member, the Squash Sport Lead for the 2019 Canada Winter Games held in Red Deer and as a Certified Coach.  In addition, she is an active player in both singles and doubles having competed in many provincial and national championships over the years.

“I am honoured and excited to be able to serve the squash community as a Squash Canada Board member,” said Henderson. “Given where we are with the pandemic and the gradual return to play, squash faces significant challenges, but also opportunity.  I believe my perspective as a player, coach, and grassroots sport builder can add value to the work of Squash Canada and I look forward to working with stakeholders across the country to strengthen and build our sport.”

In her professional career, Lisa is currently an Instructor at the Donald School of Business at Red Deer College and has also held the roles of Program Manager for the School of Continuing Education and a Training and Development Coordinator with Red Deer College.

“On behalf of the entire Squash Canada Board of Directors and our Staff, I wish to congratulate and warmly welcome our new Director-at-Large, Lisa Henderson,” said Squash Canada President Steve Wren. “Lisa has been a close ally of Squash Canada having worked closely with our Staff and Board as the Squash Sport Lead at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.  She is an active master’s player and notable contributor of her time and experience within the Alberta squash community.  Welcome Lisa!”

Squash Canada would also like to acknowledge outgoing Board member Keith Flavell (Montreal, QC) and Andrew Thompson (Toronto, ON) who also ran for election to the Squash Canada Board of Directors. It goes without saying that Squash Canada is privileged to have three extraordinary individuals willing to put forward their time and efforts to make squash in Canada better for all those that grace the court.

“With Lisa’s entry, it’s always difficult to see Squash Canada Board members transition out,” said Wren. “We wish to thank outgoing Director-at-Large, Keith Flavell from Montreal, for his time spent working with Squash Canada initiatives, for his involvement in Committees, sub-groups, and for his sound legal mind that helped guide our decisions.  We will see you around the courts soon Keith. Lastly, I wish to thank Andrew Thompson for his strong nomination to join the Board of Directors, which proved most challenging to the other candidates. With Andrew’s vast experience at the club, provincial and national level, we trust he will continue to serve the interest of squash in Canada, through his participation in the High-Performance Committee and other initiatives.”

Squash Canada would also like to congratulate Shaun Thorson of Gatineau, QC, who has been re-elected by acclamation to the Board of Directors in the role of Vice President, Finance.  Shaun, a CEO in his work life with Skills/Compétences Canada, has been a valued member of the Board for five years now and will continue to provide guidance as Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee and as a leader in many organizational initiatives.

They join returning members of the Board: Steve Wren (QC), President, Steph Edmison (ON), Athlete Director, and Directors at Large, Sandra Thompson (BC), Carol Stewart (ON), Alan Fern (SK) and Bruce Marrison (ON).
