Squash Canada is thrilled to announce the eight athletes that will represent Canada in this historic edition of the World Team Squash Championships, between December 9 to the 15, in Hong Kong, China. This year’s competition is being held in the world-class facilities of the Hong Kong Football Club and will be the first to see the women’s and men’s events run side by side.
The Canadian’s will be led by two accomplished coaches, Victoria Lust and Tyler Osborne. On the women’s side, Victoria Lust, whose impressive career saw her rise to world No. 12 and earn a silver medal with the English Team at the 2018 World Team Championships (Dalian, China), will inspire and lead the women’s squad with her invaluable experience. Tyler Osborne, a member of the 2010 bronze finishing Canadian Men’s Junior World Team, and the current head coach of the United States Naval Academy Squash Team will bring a wealth of coaching experience to the men’s team.
The Women’s World Team Championships, established in 1979, has seen Canada compete in every edition since its inception. Our highest result came in the inaugural event, where Canada secured fourth place. This year’s women’s team is a blend of experience and fresh talent, who will be following up a 7th place finish (2022). Hollie Naughton and Nikki Todd, both seasoned players, will be competing in their fifth WTC. Nicole Bunyan will participate in her second iteration, while Niki Shemirani will make her debut on the world stage in Hong Kong. Together, these athletes represent the strength and depth of Canadian squash.
Since its inception in 1967, the Men’s World Team Championships has been a cornerstone of international squash, and Canada has been present at the event since joining in 1971. Our best finish came in Malaysia (1997) when the team placed second. This year, the men’s team features seasoned players such as David Baillargeon, competing in his third World Team Championships, and Salah Eltorgman, who is set to participate in his second. The squad also includes Connor Turk and Graeme Schnell, who are both making their debut at this world-class event and are bringing their determination and skill to represent Canada.
The tournament opens with three days of pool play, December 9-11, followed by positional play offs December 12-15.
With both Canadian women’s and men’s teams set to showcase their skill, dedication, and sportsmanship, Canada is primed for an exciting and historic performance at this year’s World Team Squash Championships. We wish our athletes the best of luck as they compete for global glory in Hong Kong this December!
