VANCOUVER – Melanie Jans and Carolyn Russell, both of Vancouver, advanced to the main draw after winning their second round qualifying matches Wednesday night at the $28,000 Sun and Surf women’s international squash tournament.
The competition is the first event of the 2011-12 season on the Canadian squash circuit and is also a stop on the women’s pro tour.
VANCOUVER – Melanie Jans and Carolyn Russell, both of Vancouver, advanced to the main draw after winning their second round qualifying matches Wednesday night at the $28,000 Sun and Surf women’s international squash tournament.

Russell defeated Samantha Cornett of Ottawa 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 11-4 to advance to the main draw. Jans swept Leonie Holt of England 11-6, 11-7, 14-12. The other two players advancing were Kristen Lange of the U.S., and Nayelli Herdandez of Mexico who eliminated Stephanie Edmison of Toronto 11-8, 5-11, 11-6, 14-12.
‘’Carolyn defeated Samantha in a tough and physical 4 games,’’ said Canadian coach Shauna Flath of Vancouver. ‘’Melanie played outstanding tactical squash as she slowed down the pace with Leoni and her patience and court awareness was definitely evident.’’
Jans faces third-seed Samantha Teran of Mexico in her opening round main draw match while Russell faces Engy Kheirallah of Egypt.
Two Canadians were pre-qualified for the main draw. Miranda Ranieri of Waterloo, Ont., faces top-seed Jaclyn Hawkes of New Zealand and Alexandra Norman of Montreal battles fourth-seed Latasha Khan of the U.S.
Matches start at 5 p.m. at the Jericho Tennis Club
