The 2021 Canadian Men’s and Women’s Open Championships will be run as a PSA Challenger 10 Women’s and Men’s Event.

Only the OPEN division will be run in 2021 with our Masters and Companion categories returning in 2022.

PSA members with tied rankings will be broken based on Squash Canada Club Locker Ratings as of October 1st, 2021.

Wildcards will be given to non-PSA members based on Squash Canada Club Locker Ratings as of September 15th, 2021.

Wildcards will be given to non-PSA members based on Squash Canada Club Locker Ratings as of September 15th, 2021 with priority given to Canadian Senior Athletes and Next Gen Squad Athletes.

NOTE: The 2021 Canadian Junior Championships registration is by INVITE ONLY.  Please see criteria below and contact Director of Athlete Development Jamie Nicholls at jamie.nicholls@squash.ca and/or your Provincial/Territorial Association for more information.

Qualification Criteria:

For the 2021 Canadian Junior Championships, to be held October 21st – October 24th in Toronto (venue to be confirmed). Squash Canada will be piloting a limited field and subsequent selection process.

  • Each category (GU13, GU15, GU17, GU19, BU13, BU15, BU17, BU19) will be limited to 16 athletes as follows:
    • Top 10 Club Locker Rated Eligible Players per category as of July 15th, 2021
    • 1 Wildcard Selection to each of AB/BC/ON as nominated by October 1st, 2021
    • 3 Wildcard selections to non-AB/BC/ON P/Ts by application. Selections are to be submitted by the P/Ts on behalf of member athletes by September 7th, 2021. Applications will be reviewed by the Squash Canada Junior and High-Performance Committees and determined by September 15th, 2021. Criteria used for selection will include but not be limited to Club Locker Rating, Head-to-Head Results, Provincial/National Playing Experience, Reference from Provincial/Territorial Coaching Staff, and Regional Diversity. The committee may ask for National physical and technical testing results and/or match play video as required.

Unfilled spots will be awarded to the next highest rated Club Locker eligible athletes as of July 15th, 2021.

Ties in Club Locker Rating will be broken by most recent Head to Head results since January 1st, 2018 and then historical Club Locker Rating (ie. if Player’s A and B both have a 4.5 rating, but Player A most recently had a 4.5 and Player B most recently had a 4.45, Player A will be selected).

The Canadian Junior Championships will be held across two venues.

We are pleased to announce that our secondary venue alongside Yorkdale Shopping Centre will be Urban Squash Toronto (UST). UST is also our event charity partner and has 4 courts located via public transit in Downsview Park, Toronto.

The majority of junior matches will take place at UST with U19 semifinals and all finals being played on the glass court at Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

A full COVID-19 Protocol will be released in the coming weeks, but athletes should expect the following venue protocols at a minimum:

  • Time restrictions on pre/post match arrival/departures
  • Maximum of 2 spectators per athlete (this INCLUDES a coach)
  • All athletes and spectators will be required to show accreditation which will include proof of vaccination status upon entry of all facilities.
  • Limited warm-up area and access to change rooms (no towels)
  • No food and beverage service at the venue
  • Physical distancing and wearing of masks when not playing
  • The Open event of the Oxford Properties Canadian Senior Championships held at Yorkdale will be a ticketed event, with limited available seating due to safety restrictions on capacity. Any junior who has qualified to play a match at Yorkdale will not be required to buy a ticket, nor their 2 designated spectators (including coach). Athletes wishing to watch Open events are encouraged to buy tickets in advance as it is expected to sell out! Look for ticketing announcement in the coming weeks.
  • Full vaccination is required for all participants in this event with medical, religious and age (U12) exceptions. This includes coaches, officials, volunteers, spectators and all attendees.
  • Athletes will be required to upload their proof of vaccination prior to the event through a portal that will be launched in the coming weeks.
  • Athletes under 12 who are not vaccinated must provide proof of age and wear a level 3 mask during match play.
  • Spectators/coaches will be accredited upon first arrival for the event; masks will be mandatory at all times within event facilities.
  • All attendees, even after initial accreditation, must be prepared to show proper identification each time they enter event facilities. Valid identification includes such documents as: Driver’s licence, Health Card, Passport, Birth certificate
  • Athletes travelling prior to the event must adhere to Federal and Province of Ontario travel regulations.

No championship transportation system will exist to shuttle players from the official hotel to UST or to Yorkdale. Transportation remains an athlete responsibility – both Yorkdale Shopping Center, Urban Squash Toronto and the tournament hotel are conveniently located on the Toronto Subway Line.
