Ottawa, ON—The 2014 Canadian Junior Squash Championships wrapped up this past weekend at the Mayfair Parkway in Markham, Ontario. Every year, the Canadian Junior Squash Championships brings together our top junior athletes and showcases just how talented our athletes are. .This year’s event featured over 200 participants from across Canada competing for their respective titles.

The final match of the Boys U13 draw was a nail-biter between hometown hero Nikhil Ismail and Calgary’s own Abdelrahman Dweek. Their third and final game went to extra points, reaching a final score of 20-18 in Nikhil’s favour. The Girls U13 final match was a battle between the Stephenson twins, with underdog Lucy coming out on top in five close games.

The Boys U15 championship round was an all-Ontario showdown against Niagara’s Akasham Rajagopaul and Toronto’s Jackson Kay. Akasham won the final match in four close games. Home-crowd favourite Nicole Kendall competed and was successful in the finals against BC’s own Andrea Toth in five intense games.  Akasham and Nicole have added these U15 Canadian titles to their 2013 Canadian Junior Open titles won back in December.

The Boys U17 title match was between 1-2 seeds Carter Robitaille and Alexi Gosset, both representing Toronto. Robitaille was able to defend his U17 title in three games, enhancing his resume from his 3rd place win at the 2013 Canadian Junior Open. Last year’s silver medalist and top-seeded Sophie Mehta faced off against Calgary’s Tara Shannon in the Girls U17 championship. Sophie was victorious as she took the title her sister won at last year’s championship.

The Boys U19 draw was filled with upsets, as a number of unseeded players played their way through the tournament. In particular, dark horse Lockie Munro of Toronto faced off against top seeded David Baillargeon of Quebec. David captured the title after a tough three-game match. 1-2 seeds Alyssa Mehta and Chloe Chemtob battled in a long, five game match for the Girls U19 championship title, where Chloe came out on top.

Every year, the Alex Doucas Memorial Award is presented to a competitor at the Canadian Junior Squash Championships who exemplifies the spirit of fair play, enjoyment of life, and commitment to excellence, as Alex Doucas did during his lifetime. This year’s recipient is Toronto’s own Girls U19 competitor Alison Richmond. Congratulations Alison!

Congratulations to all the participants of the 2014 Canadian Junior Squash Championships. We at Squash Canada send out a huge thank you to the Mayfair Club for hosting such a great event, along with the tournament sponsors and officials. See you next year!
