Ottawa (ON) – The 2015 Black Knight Canadian University and College Squash Championships were held this past weekend at Executive Squash and Fitness Club in Vaughn, Ontario. Over 60 student-athletes represented 14 post-secondary institutions from across the country, participating in various Men’s and Women’s divisions.

In the top female division, the Women’s Open draw, Evelyn Moorhouse from the University of Toronto claimed the title after defeating Holly Delavigne of Western University in a very close final. Delavigne won the first two games 11-5, 11-5, but Moorhouse battled back with 11-6, 12-10, 11-6 wins. This was 20-year-old Moorhouse’s first national title.

In the Men’s Open, Andrew Schnell was looking to defend his 2014 title and bring the trophy back to Calgary for the 5th straight year. Schnell’s older brother, Graeme, was a five-time Canadian University Champion himself, winning the title three straight years leading up to Andrew’s take over. Andrew, a 23-year-old student at the University of Calgary, was the top seed in the draw and went through the event without dropping a game for the second straight year. He faced David Baillargeon of College de Maisonneuve in Quebec in the Men’s final, winning 11-7, 11-6, 11-6.

Schnell’s younger sister Keira, also a student at the University of Calgary, made her first appearance at the Canadian University and College Championships, finding her own way to the podium in the Women’s A/B division. She was defeated by Shanaz Modi of the University of Toronto in the final (13-11, 11-4, 11-8) but was happy to add her silver medal to the trophy case.

Other divisional winners from the weekend include Alexander Seto (Men’s A/B, Western University), Karen Lam (Women’s C, Western University), and Robyn Lewis (Women’s D, Western University).

Squash Canada would like to thank David Cooper and his Varsity Blues Women’s Squash Team as well as Rob Brooks and those at Executive Squash and Fitness Club for putting on a great event.
