The Lapham Cup for the men’s singles competition was won by Canada by a score of 13-10.  The Grant Trophy for men’s doubles was won by the United States, 24-13.  The Crawford Trophy, contested by the women in both singles and doubles, was won by the United States by a score of 24-9.  And the Lawrence-Wilkins Trophy, for men’s “Legends” – over 65 years of age – competing in doubles, was also won by the United States by a score of 11-8.

All of the matches were contested in the finest Lapham Grant tradition: fiercely and honestly (without referees) and (for the most part!) without hostilities.  The weekend was also filled with the usual spirited Lapham-Grant social events, all wonderfully hosted by the organizers and staff at the Merion Cricket Club.  The Saturday evening black tie dinner notably included an appearance by squash legend Darwin Kingsley, who recounted his personal experiences from previous Lapham-Grant matches – in the 1940s!

“It was a great event”, said Canadian captain Keith Flavell, “the individual matches were incredibly close – which is what you really hope for in putting them together, even more than the actual results – and all the players on both teams were terrific, both on and off the court.  Marci and Bob did a tremendous job as co-captains, and I can’t overemphasize what a pleasure it was to work with the US captains, especially Mark and Gilly, and everyone else at Merion.  It was an honour to play a role in this weekend’s event.”

Next year’s Lapham-Grant Matches will be hosted by the London Squash and Fitness Club, in London, Ontario from April 23rd – 26th, 2015.
