Individual Competition Comes to a Close at the World University Championships

    The individual portion the World University Squash Championships concluded on Thursday in Chennai, India, where the three Canadians in competition found themselves battling for placing.

    The individual portion the World University Squash Championships concluded on Thursday in Chennai, India, where the three Canadians in competition found themselves battling for placing.

    Alix Younger started the day for the Canadians, facing Sachika Ingale of India in the playoff for 13th place. Younger had a slow start and went down two games, but quickly found her compusure and won the next two games convincingly. The final and deciding game went to point, but Ingale was able to pull through with the win 3-2 (11-9, 12-10, 6-11, 3-11, 12-10). With this loss, Younger finished her individual event in 14th place.

    Cameron Seth was next up against Chennai local Ravi Dixit in their battle for 11th place. Dixit took the match 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-3) to determine Seth's 12th place finish.

    James Van Staveren was the final Canadian to compete on Thursday, as he faced Ho Wai Yeung of Hong Kong for 9th place. James went up 2-0, but Yeung battled back to win the next three to secure the 3-2 victory (11-13, 4-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-8) ). Van Staveren ended up 10th in the men's individual event.

    The team competition of the event begins Friday morning, with eight teams of three players competing for the title. Canada's first match is against South Africa, and they must win to continue towards the medal round.
