Squash Confirmed as Late Addition to the 2023 Pan Am Games Program

Ottawa, ON (December 16, 2020) — Squash Canada is pleased to share the news that squash has been added to the sport program for the 2023 Pan Am Games to be held in Santiago, Chile.

Only Olympic sports are granted permanent status in the Pan Am Games. The possible addition of non-Olympic sports is made on a Games by Games basis. Pressures to keep the 2023 Games to a manageable size and expense in a pandemic era left squash off the list earlier in this year, when the sport program was officially announced by the Panam Sports organization.

Squash Canada applauds the Federacion Panamericana de Squash and the World Squash Federation on its advocacy efforts and financial commitment to get squash back into the Games.

Squash has been included in every Pan Am Games since first being included in the 1995 Games in Mar del Plata, Dominican Republic. Canada has excelled in the Games, winning a total of 41 medals over that time span, including a best-ever haul of 7 medals at the 2019 Games in Lima, Peru.

Panam Sports announced creation of a junior edition of the Games last year, a first ever Junior Pan Am Games to be staged in 2021 in Cali, Colombia. Squash had already been included in those Games for U23 athletes.
