The event dates back to 1973 in South London, where a team competition entitled “The Junior International Festival” first took place. It joined four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Sweden. The event gained international popularity, and in 1980, the individual competition was added. The current World Junior Squash Championships consist of junior men’s and junior women’s individuals, with a team event rotating gender annually.

Canada’s twelve talented juniors will all be competing in the individual competition, with Brianna, Charlotte, Erica and Molly making up the women’s team.

For James and Darosham, Malaysia 2019 will not be their first rodeo. Both represented Canada on the men’s team at last year’s World Junior Championships in Chennai, India. In the individual event, James made it all the way to the Round of 16, and Darosham finished in the semi-finals of the plate.

Sarah Cao is one of Canada’s rising stars who will be representing our nation in the women’s individual competition. She recently captured a bronze medal in girls U17 at junior nationals and finished 5th in the 2019 Canada Winter Games individual category. “I am really excited and grateful to be playing in such a high-level competition,” said Sarah. “This is an amazing opportunity for me to improve and have fun!”

Jonathan Hill will be returning as head coach and had this to say about leading the squad at the upcoming World Juniors: “We are very excited about this young team who will be representing Canada at the Junior Women’s Worlds in Kuala Lumpur this summer,” said Jonathan. “Two of our players are eligible for the 2021 Junior Worlds, so this will be such a valuable experience for them. We also have (8) additional players competing in the World Individuals, which is a record, making it 12 Canadians travelling to Malaysia this summer. Many of these players will also be competing in the Junior Pan Americans in Toronto in June, so we are looking forward to them taking that experience into the Junior Worlds and coming away with some strong placements at the Worlds.”

Janet Macleod is filling the important role of team manager this year and is eager to see the squad compete on such a grand scale. Janet will also be supporting our athletes as manager at the 2019 Pan American Junior Squash Championships taking place in a few weeks. “I am certainly thrilled to be part of such a big event with such a large representation of Canadian Juniors,” said Janet. “It will be truly exciting to see the junior girls team perform in Malaysia in August, coming on the heels of their Pan Am tournament experience in June. We look forward to some strong individual performances from all our Canadian Juniors, as well as looking to improve on the last Junior Women's Worlds team performance in New Zealand. These international events, with so many Canadian Juniors involved, can only add value to the squash programs that are happening all across the country.”
