Calgary (AB) – Canada’s 2015 Junior Squash Champions were crowned in Calgary on Sunday, at the conclusion of the 2015 Rogers Insurance Canadian Junior Squash Championships. Eight athletes from across the country took home titles in the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 Boys and Girls divisions, which were hosted at World Health Edgemont in the city’s northwest.
One of the most unique parts of winning these Championships, having dated back to the 1970s, is seeing the other names that have hed these titles. “The title hit home when he realized that his name will be on the same trophy as Jonathon Power”, said Jeff Deverill, father and coach of the Boys 13 Champion Dylan Deverill. Deverill, of Cambridge, Ontario, beat out defending champion Nikhil Ismail in the final, securing his first championship without dropping a game all tournament. Lucia Bicknell of Vancouver, British Columbia also claimed the 13 title on the girl’s side without losing a game, defeating Toronto’s Molly Chadwick 3-0 in the final.
The hosts from World Health Edgemont were well represented in the Under-15 finals, with star players and second seeds Abdelrahman Dweek and Bethany Churchill earning their way to Sunday’s gold medal matches. Unfortunately the hometown support wasn’t enough to pull them through, as they each settled for a silver medal, losing to George Crowne of Toronto and Emma Jinks of Stratford, PEI, respectively.
The Jinks family has some more hardware to take home to PEI, as older brother Connor also won gold in a closely contested match against Calgary’s Noel Heaton in the Boys 17 final. Nicole Kendall of Newmarket, Ontario added to her 2014 Under-15 title by taking this year’s Under-17 Championship.
The host club did not end up without a Champion, taking home the biggest title of the weekend in the Boys 19 Championship. Michael Mehl continued his excellent play of late, losing only one game all event and putting together a solid performance in the final against Rahul Sehrawat of Toronto. “I played very well this tournament and had many tough matches. It was a great final between Rahul and I, I have so much respect for him and his squash,” said Mehl following the final. “I’ve been training so hard to win this tournament. It just proves to me that my hard work is paying off.”
Chloe Chemtob of Quebec won her second straight Girls 19 title defeating Sophie Mehta of Toronto in the final. Chemtob was also part of Saturday night’s White Hat Ceremony, which included a special appearance from Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “It was a great experience and honour to meet the Honourable and famous Mayor Naheed Nenshi. That was of special significance to me.”
