Canadian Athletes Podium at First-Ever Pan American U15/U17 Squash Championships

Eight Canadian juniors traveled to Guatemala last week to compete in the inaugural 2024 Pan American U15/U17 Squash Championships. Held from August 29 to September 1 in the City of Guatemala, athletes came away with four medals including two gold, one silver, and one bronze.

  • Heyang Angela Hong – Gold, Girls U17 
  • Veera Dhaliwal – Gold, Girls U15 
  • Malika Markman – Bronze – Girls U15  
  • Jack Chen – Silver, Boys U15  

Competing in the U15 division, Veera Dhaliwal of British Columbia was seeded first overall and proved her seeding by winning gold. Dhaliwal succeeded over Mexico’s Ginebra Jasso Pasos [2] 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 11-5). Fellow Canadian, Malika Markman [5/8] of British Columbia, placed third which earned her a bronze along with Karen Julissa Barrera Padilla of Guatemala [5/8]. On the boy’s side, Jack Chen [2] of Ontario secured a silver medal after falling to Colombia’s Martin Mejia [1] in a tough battle: 2-3 (9-11, 11-5, 11-2, 1-11, 3-11). 

Canada’s second gold medal was won by British Columbia’s Heyang Angela Hong, who competed in the Girls U17 category. Like Dhaliwal, Hong was seeded first overall and dominated the field; Hong succeeded over second-seed Luana Leon of Peru 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-3). 

Congratulations are extended to all the athletes that participated in the inaugural Pan American U15/U17 Squash Championships! With your strength, skill, and tenacity, Canada was able to secure the first overall position for medals won (4) at the Championship.
