Following a record-breaking 2025 Canadian Junior Open presented by Forthlane Partners, Canadian junior athletes travelled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to compete at the 2025 U.S. Junior Open (20 – 23 December). After a gruelling few days of competition, two Canadians emerged victorious, with Eugenie Cao (BC) and Obie Ryding (ON) each claiming championship titles after five-game finals.
Cao captured the Girls Under-11 title, while Ryding secured the Boys Under-15 title, Canada’s first U.S. Junior Open titles since 2010, when Nick Sachvie claimed the Boys Under-19 title.
As the No. 2 Seed, Cao moved confidently through the draw, dropping just one game before the final. In the championship match, Cao defeated the top seed to become the first Canadian to win an Under-11 title at the U.S. Junior Open.
After finishing 7-8th at last year’s USJO, Ryding returned with grit, navigating a deep draw and downing the top seed in the semifinals to reach his first USJO final. With the USJO closing out 2025, Ryding’s title caps off an impressive medal haul, including victories at the Canadian Junior Open earlier this month and the Canadian Junior National Championships earlier this spring.
“I’m proud of how our athletes represented Canada this week,” said Nick Sachvie, U.S. Junior Open coach and three-time U.S.J.O champion. “Seeing Eugenie and Obie win five-game finals at such a high-level event says a lot about them as athletes. Equally important, these results show that Canada’s junior development pathway is moving in the right direction, with athletes ready to compete and succeed.”
“Seeing all of the Canadian players representing at the world’s largest junior squash tournament, supporting one another throughout—was truly special,” said Marci Sier, Lead USJO Coach. “With two Canadian champions crowned, this event was a remarkable achievement for our team. Congratulations to every athlete; we are immensely proud of what you achieved.”
Squash Canada is proud of all the Canadian athletes, along with their coaches and families, who made the journey to Philadelphia. Congratulations to all our players for representing Canada with pride and excellence at the 2025 U.S. Junior Open!
