Shahier Razik & Miranda Ranieri Defend Titles at 100th Anniversary of the Canadian Squash Championships

    OTTAWA (ON) – Tournament #1 seed Shahier Razik of Toronto, Ontario captured his 6th Canadian Squash Championship open national title over the weekend defeating long-time rival and Canadian #2 Shawn Delierre of Montreal in a marathon match lasting well over 2 hours 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 13-11, 11-7.  With the win, Razik is now closing in on Jonathon Power’s record 8 national open titles.

    OTTAWA (ON) – Tournament #1 seed Shahier Razik of Toronto, Ontario captured his 6th Canadian Squash Championship open national title over the weekend defeating long-time rival and Canadian #2 Shawn Delierre of Montreal in a marathon match lasting well over 2 hours 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 13-11, 11-7.  With the win, Razik is now closing in on Jonathon Power’s record 8 national open titles.  

    Capturing 3rd place in the Men’s Open event was #4 seed Andrew MacDougall of Calgary, who returned after an 8-month injury hiatus to defeat #6 seed Dane Sharp of Toronto, 14-12, 3-11, 15 – 13, 11-5.  Sharp, upset tournament #3 seed Andrew Schnell of Calgary, in the quarterfinals to make his first top 4 finish at the Canadian Squash Championships.   Andrew Schnell defeated brother Graeme Schnell in the 5 – 6 place match. Rounding out the top 8 was Tyler Hamilton of Burlington Ontario who defeated David Letourneau of Calgary for 7th place. 

    In the highly anticipated Women’s Open Championship final, tournament #2 seed Miranda Ranieri of Waterloo, Ontario defended her title defeating Ottawa’s Samantha Cornett the tournament #1 seed, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7.  Miranda turned in a great performance with very few errors to capture her 3rd consecutive national open title.

    #3 seed Alexandra Norman of Montreal defeated #4 seed Susie King of Calgary to capture 3rd place 11-6, 11-6, 11-6.  Former national team member Melanie Jans now residing in Tampa defeated the #2 junior in Canada Hollie Naughton of Oakville in the Women’s 5 – 6th place match, while, Nikki Todd of Regina, Saskatchewan defeated Alix Younger of Winnipeg, Manitoba for 7th place.

    Over 290 players from all over Canada participated in the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Squash Championships.  The event featured age-group events from 30+ to the 70+ age categories as well as companion events A, B, C graded divisions.  Bringing a new dimension to the Open Division matches was the inclusion of all-glass court sponsored by Manta Sports.
