Close to 300 doubles squash players have landed in Toronto with their sights set on capturing a national title. Hosted by the Toronto Cricking Skating & Curling Club, the Slaight Music and Ridley Windows & Doors 2017 Canadian Doubles Squash Championship kicked off Wednesday with action continuing through the weekend cumulating with championship Sunday.
Close to 300 doubles squash players have landed in Toronto with their sights set on capturing a national title. Hosted by the Toronto Cricking Skating & Curling Club, the Slaight Music and Ridley Windows & Doors 2017 Canadian Doubles Squash Championship kicked off Wednesday with action continuing through the weekend cumulating with championship Sunday.
In total, 282 athletes making up 141 teams will compete in 185 matches as they compete for national titles in 14 national divisions and 3 companion events. Ranging from the Men’s and Women’s Open elite level to the Men’s 80+ division, these competitive women and men will leave it all on the court.
The 2017 edition features a strong roster of returning national champions looking to defend their titles.
The 2016 Men’s Open champs Scott Arnold and Robin Clarke are back to defend their title, while on the women’s side, one half of the defending Women’s Open champion team returns, as Nikki Todd teams up with Seanna Keating. Todd and Keating face tough competition, with Stephanie Hewitt and Suzie Pierrepont standing in their way as the top seeded team.
2016 Men’s 40+ Champion Jeff Mulligan has partnered up with Douglass Lifford and moved into the Men’s 50+ division but will face the 2016 champ of the division Andrew Slater and partner Greg Zaff. Men’s 60+ reigning champions Sean McDonough and Sandy Tierney have returned to defend their title for a fourth consecutive year, while the duo of John Brazillian and Malcolm return to the courts to defend the 2016 Men’s 65+ crown. David Potter and Chris Wheeler return in hopes of earning a second consecutive Men’s 70+ title. Graham Sharman, one half of the Men’s 75+ 2016 champion team has partnered with Ted Marmor looking to claim this year’s crown. And for the first time this year, the Men’s 80+ title will be crowned for the first time, with 3-time Men’s 75+ champion Ritchie Bell partnering up with Barry Abelson in a bid to capture the inaugural title. On the women’s side, back with her 2012, 2014 and 2015 championship partner Jody Warden, Michele Ramsey returns looking to capture her 5th national championship in 6 years in the Women’s 40+. One half of the 2016 winning duo of the Women’s 50+ division returns this year as Diane Naughton partners with Sally Philp in hopes of capturing her fourth title in the division. Cathy Tuckwell and Susan Bell enter the Women’s 55+ with the top seed, Tuckwell hoping to claim back-to-back titles. 13-time national champion (various divisions) Lolly Gillen and partner Sibylle Witt enter the Women’s 60+ event as top seed with sights set on an impressive 14th national title.
With lots of guaranteed fierce competition set to hit the courts, there is little doubt that the Slaight Music and Ridley Windows & Doors 2017 Canadian Doubles Squash Championship will be an event to remember. Toronto and area residents are encouraged to make their way down to Wilson Avenue and take in the action – experience the excitement, competitiveness and comradery of a Canadian Doubles Championship!
