Nimes, France – Team Canada swept the Czech Republic today at the Women’s World Team Squash Championships in Nimes, France. Canada now advances to play an up and coming French squad, and a victory over the hosts would guarantee the Canadian team a Top 10 finish at the Championships.
Nimes, France – Team Canada swept the Czech Republic today at the Women’s World Team Squash Championships in Nimes, France. Canada now advances to play an up and coming French squad, and a victory over the hosts would guarantee the Canadian team a Top 10 finish at the Championships.
After losing a nail bitter to 5th seeded New Zealand in the Quarter-finals, the 11th seeded Canadians were able to overcome their disappointment, and a quick turnaround, to earn a convincing 3-0 victory over the 13th seeded Czechs.
Canada’s #1 ranked player, Sam Cornett of Ottawa, kicked things off by overcoming a slow start to defeat her Czech counterpart, Lucie Fialova, three sets to one (8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 12-10). Montreal’s Alex Norman picked up where Cornett left off and defeated World #50 Olga Ertolva by an identical three sets-to-one margin (11-6, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7). With the outcome of the best-of-three tie no longer in doubt, the Czech team withdrew and Canada won the 3rd match in a walkover.
Executive Director of Squash Canada Danny Da Costa was very excited by what he saw, “Today’s win against the Czech Republic ensures that we will improve our overall team performance from the previous world championships. Our Canadian women have played very well this week, losing narrowly to New Zealand and we were very competitive against the defending world champions Australia. Our girls are getting better as the week progresses, hopefully we will finish strong”.
Canada’s will take on a tough France squad featuring World #14 Camille Serme, World #41 Coline Aumard, and World #61 Laura Pomportes this Friday. About the Women’s World Team Championship
The Women’s World Team Championship brings together 26 of the top female national squash teams every 2 years to crown a world champion. Teams of four athletes from each country vie against each other in hopes of claiming the world title for their country.
Canada will host the next Women’s World Team Squash Championships in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, from December 1 – 5, 2014.
