Canada Takes Doubles Gold at Canadian Junior Open

     

    Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario (December 12th, 2012) – Canadian squash players Alyssa Mehta and Mariam Mansoor  took home gold in their respective decisions  at the Canadian Junior Open in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario on Tuesday. The titles marked the conclusion of a very successful event for Canada as over the eight divisions; Canada won two gold, six silver, and five bronze.

     

    Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario (December 12th, 2012) – Canadian squash players Alyssa Mehta and Mariam Mansoor  took home gold in their respective decisions  at the Canadian Junior Open in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario on Tuesday. The titles marked the conclusion of a very successful event for Canada as over the eight divisions; Canada won two gold, six silver, and five bronze.

    Toronto’s Mehta, seeded first overall in the Girls Under 17 division, dominated the field in winning six straight matches and the title without dropping a single set.  Richmond Hill’s Mansoor was also seeded 1st , in the Under 13 division, and was just as dominate as Mehta, losing only a single set on her road to the title.

    The Canadian Junior Open, one of the prestigious events on the international squash calendar, brings together players from all corners of the globe not just to compete for championships, but also to build new relationships and experience different cultures. 

    “It is always great to see so much participation from around the world at this event. We had players from Japan, Australia, South Africa; it was amazing to see”, said Squash Canada Sport Development Coordinator Whitney Fuller.  “It gives our Canadian players not only exposure to international competition but also the opportunity to meet different people and make new friends.”

    270 players, representing five continents, competed in eight separate divisions with the final results as follows:

    ·         Boys Under 19: 1st – Edgar Zayas (Mexico), 2nd – Tomotako Endo (Japan), 3rd – Cameron Seth (Canada)
    ·         Boys Under 17: 1st – Diego Elias (Peru), 2nd – David Baillargeon (Canada), 3rd – Felipe Herrera (Colombia)
    ·         Boys Under 15: 1st – Jesus Camacho (Mexico), 2nd – Brett Schille (Canada), 3rd – Yaser Khan – (Canada)  
    ·         Boys Under 13: 1st – Enriquez Alejandro (Guatemala), 2nd – Alejandro Ayala (Mexico), 3rd – James Flynn (Canada)
    ·         Girls Under 19: 1st – Karla Urrutia (Mexico), 2nd – Hollie Naughton (Canada), 3rd – Alexandra Toth (Canada)
    ·         Girls Under 17: 1st – Alyssa Mehta (Canada), 2nd – Madlen O’Connor (Canada), 3rd – Diana Gasca (Mexico)
    ·         Girls Under 15: 1st – Laura Barriga (Mexico), 2nd – Nicole Kendall (Canada), 3rd – Amy Commisso (Canada)
    ·         Girls Under 13: 1st – Mariam Mansor (Canada), 2nd – Andrea Toth (Canada), 3rd – Dina Anguiano (Mexico)

    About the Canadian Junior Open
    The Canadian Junior Open is a squash tournament held annually in Canada that is open to boy and girl squash players under the age of nineteen from around the world.  Participants compete in a single elimination draw format across 4 age divisions.
