With nineteen teams made up of fifty-nine competitors, the courts at the Windsor Squash & Fitness Club (WSFC) are ready to host the 2018 Ciena Canadian Men’s and Women’s Team Squash Championships. From February 16-18, the WSFC will welcome Canada’s top players as they represent their home Province/Territory in hopes of capturing the separate men and women teams’ national titles.
This year’s event provides fans with an experience no Professional Squash Association (PSA) world tour tournament has to offer, this much Canadian talent altogether competing in a single venue at one event. With 8 of Canada’s 10 High Performance Squad members, as well as 4 members of the Canada’s Transition Squad featured in the 2018 edition not even the largest PSA world tour event features that much Canadian talent at one time.
Quebec is the current reigning champions in both the Men’s and Women’s events. Bringing the same 3-man roster to the 2018 event, Quebec’s men look to repeat as national champions and enter as the #1 seed. Led by Canada’s top ranked male and Canadian veteran, Shawn De Lierre, Quebec will face a tough 10-team draw in their journey to repeat. Amongst the competitively deep draw, looking to dethrone Team Quebec is #2 seeded, Team Alberta, who is led by 2016 Canadian men’s single champion, Andrew Schnell.
On the Women’s side, Team Ontario enters the 2018 event seeded #1 led by Canada’s top ranked player Samantha Cornett (world ranked #23) and Canada’s reigning singles champion Hollie Naughton. In their way, a national title-focused Team Alberta. Seeded #2 for 2018, Danielle Letourneau looks to guide Team Alberta as they seek to revenge their 2017 finals loss and battle back to the championship match up in hopes of earning the national title.
Team PEI has fielded a young, talented squad, which features a sibling trio, including Canada’s top ranked Junior female, Emma Jinks. Jinks is joined by brothers Connor and Liam who will represent PEI on the Men’s side.
During the 3 days, over 100 matches will be played giving squash players, fans and the general public the opportunity to watch a number of high calibre performances. Admission will be FREE for spectators throughout the weekend including the championship matches scheduled for Sunday morning. The public is encouraged to come and cheer for the athletes and discover an amazing sport. With Canada’s elite filling the rosters, the 2018 event will be one of the most exciting to date – so get ready Southwestern Ontario, Canada’s best squash is headed your way!
