Canadian Women’s Squash Team advances to Round of 16 at Women’s World Team Championships

     

    OTTAWA (ON) – Canada has advanced to the Round of 16 at the Women’s World Team Squash Championships in Nimes, France with a dominating performance over Austria.  Canada swept the match 3-0.  They will now face the fifth seeded New Zealand team on Wednesday.  

     

    OTTAWA (ON) – Canada has advanced to the Round of 16 at the Women’s World Team Squash Championships in Nimes, France with a dominating performance over Austria.  Canada swept the match 3-0.  They will now face the fifth seeded New Zealand team on Wednesday.  

    Canada, seeded 11th got off to a great start today when Stephanie Edmison of Toronto defeated Austria’s Jacqueline Peychar 11-1, 11-6, 11-4.  Edmison, 25, was part of Canada’s gold medal winning team at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.  Canada’s #2 player Alexandra Norman of Montreal defeated Austria’s Judith Gradnitzer 11-3, 11-3, 11-3.  To complete the sweep, Canada’s #1 Samantha Cornett of Ottawa defeated Austria’s #1 Brigit Coufal 11-8, 11-2, 11-2.  With today’s victory, Canada secured 2nd place in Pool F.  Canada lost its opening match to defending World Champion Australia yesterday. 

    The other Round of 16 match-ups feature India vs. Netherlands, Malaysia vs. Czech Rep, Australia vs. USA, Hong Kong vs. South Africa, France vs. Ireland, England vs. Wales and Egypt vs. Mexico. 

    The New Zealand Team features Joelle King the World #5 player, Jaclyn Hawkes #19, Kylie Lindsay #34 and Amanda Landers-Murphy #42. New Zealand finished 4th at the previous World Team Championships in 2010.

    Canada will host the next Women’s World Team Squash Championships in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario from December 1 – 5, 2014.  

    Canada takes on New Zealand on Wednesday at 17h00 in Nimes France.  The winner will advance to the quarter finals and the losing teams will advance to the consolation playoffs to play for 9 – 16th
