OTTAWA, ON, April 29, 2019 – The 2019 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championships concluded this past weekend in Calgary, Alberta where six new teams were crowned National Champions.  In one of the largest fields ever with 61 teams competing, the host committee put on their own version of the “Calgary Stampede” throughout the weekend.  With 100+ matches the event would not have been so successful without the dedication of the Calgary Winter Club as host along with the Glencoe Club and World Health Club Edgemont that provided additional support hosting matches.

In the premier event, the Mixed Open, the number one seeded team of Stephanie and James Hewitt showed why they were indeed the team to beat.  Even when they were given a highly contested match in the semifinals, they found a way to pull through to get to the Championship Match and thus win the 2019 Mixed Open Championship (their fifth overall title since 2009).  “We had a great time playing together in Calgary, tremendous job by all the clubs and everyone involved,” said James Hewitt.  “It was nice to see so many strong young teams playing the game at such a high level. For me personally, it was a thrill again to play with Steph and compete at the open level.”  Rounding out the medalists in the Mixed Open was the pair of Robert Birrell and Jackie Moss winning Silver and Stephanie Edmison and Eric Watson winning Bronze.

In what may be considered the highlight of the weekend was the emerging stars of doubles squash that participated in the Mixed B category.  The strong contingent of juniors represented themselves well by taking the top four positions in the 14-team field.  In the Championship Match, the number one seeds Mohamed Kamal and Jana Dweek defeated Bethany Churchill and Antonio Mendes by scores of 15-7, 15-14 and 15-8.  In the Bronze Medal Match, Nicole Temple and Tyson Schille defeated Jaime Delorme and Tyrell Munro by scores of 14-15, 13-15, 15-10, 15-8 and 15-13.

“We are very proud of how the Calgary squash community came together to put on the BEST EVER Mixed Doubles!  61 teams, 120 matches!” said Tournament Co-Chair Kim Watson.  “Thank-you host clubs, sponsors and all the out of town players who made this event special.  Not even a spring snow storm could slow us down from having a good time!”
