OTTAWA, ON, May 6, 2019 – Canada’s best took to the courts from April 30th to May 4th at the 2019 Canadian Squash Championships in Toronto, Ontario at the Mayfair Lakeshore Racquet Club. Over 250 players in 20 different categories competed for National Titles in Squash Canada’s premier singles championship.
The Women’s Open field showcased an elite eight of Canada’s top female squash players as they all looked to claim the National Title. But in the end only one could come out on top as number one seed Sam Cornett from Ottawa, Ontario took the National Title to become a four-time Canadian Women’s Open Champion. “I'm excited to win this year's national championship, and I'm really proud of myself. We had a small, but tough field of players. I had to dig very deep to pull it off tonight, it was a tough match with Hollie. I hope I can continue playing this well for the last bit of this season,” said Sam Cornett. Cornett’s challenger in the Championship Match was number two seed Hollie Naughton of Mississauga, Ontario, who was looking to claim her third National Title and continue her strong play that helped her jump to #30 in the recent May edition of the PSA World Rankings (and ahead of Cornett who currently sits at #34). The Championship Match was everything one would expect of two of Canada’s best players in history; a five-game thriller that saw Cornett win by scores of 11-7, 11-13, 9-11, 11-9 and 11-6. In the Bronze Medal Match, number three seed Danielle Letourneau from Calgary, Alberta captured the victory by dominating scores of 11-2, 11-4 and 11-4 over Grace Thomas from Victoria, British Columbia.
The Men’s Open field showcased 16 of Canada’s best male players looking to claim the National Title. After many intense matches that whittled the field down to two players, the Championship Match featured former Champions Shawn DeLierre (seeded #1) from Montreal, Quebec against Nick Sachvie (seeded #3/4) from St. Catharines, Ontario. However, unlike the previous five-game thriller the women displayed, the men’s final was much different as Nick Sachvie won by scores of 11-7, 11-9 and 11-5 to become a two-time Canadian Men’s Open Champion. “So happy to be back on top as the Canadian Champion. I was imagining myself being in this position again and the fact that I was able to come out on top is such a gratifying feeling,” said Nick Sachvie after the victory. In the Bronze Medal Match, Andrew Schnell from Calgary, Alberta defeated Mike McCue from Sudbury, Ontario by scores of 11-4, 11-8 and 11-8.
The Canadian Squash Championships not only feature the Open players but so many other players left Toronto leaving their mark with unique storylines. In the Canadian Men’s 30+ category, Chris Sachvie took the title in what may be the first time in Canadian squash history that two brothers captured National Titles at the same event with younger brother Nick winning the Men’s Open. And to sweeten the deal for Chris, he pulled double duty by coaching his younger brother along the way to the Men’s Open Title. “It was awesome to have my older brother Chris in my corner coaching and a big congrats to him for taking the Canadian 30+ title along the way,” stated Nick Sachvie.
In the Women’s B category, juniors Keira Hickox and Joelle Vega competed in a four-game battle with Hickox taking the win by scores of 11-6, 11-4, 9-11 and 11-6. Squash Canada believes Hickox is the youngest ever to win National Championship at the senior level. In the Men’s A category, Dominic Wren who just recently graduated from junior play defeated junior star Dylan Deverill by scores of 7-11, 11-8, 11-8 and 11-6. Dominic will take home bragging rights over his Dad and current Squash Canada President Steve Wren, who came up a bit short in the Men’s 50+ category losing to Willie Hosey by scores of 11-5, 5-11, 11-7 and 11-2. And not to be outdone by the junior stars, Hosey displayed why age is just number as he played down in the Men’s 50+ category even though he could have played in the Men’s 55+ and displayed exceptional squash skills capturing the National 50+ Title.
“We saw some epic battles here at the Championships, across all categories,” said Dan Wolfenden, Squash Canada Executive Director. “Our Open Men’s and Women’s events illustrate how close our top players are. Sam (Cornett) re-claimed the women’s crown held last by Danielle Letourneau and Hollie Naughton, in 2018 and 2017, respectively, while Nick Sachvie outlasted Shawn Delierre to succeed Andrew Schnell as Open Men’s champion. Our Masters categories were no less competitive as there were no less than six finals that went to 4 or 5 games.”
