2018 Pan American Junior Squash Championships Head to Brazil

Have you ever thought about competing for Team Canada? Wearing the red and white, with your country proudly displayed on your back? For junior squash players one such opportunity arises once a year when the countries of the Pan American region converge on the courts to battle it out at the Pan American Junior Squash Championships.

For the first time in the history of the Pan Am Junior Championships, Canada will host the 2019 Championships, and in the lead up, Squash Canada wants to ensure that all eligible players are aware of this wonderful opportunity for Canadian junior women and junior men to compete in 2018.

From June 18-24 the 2018 Pan American Junior Squash Championships will take place in Brasília, Brazil.  Squash Canada is looking to field a contingent of players as a key development opportunity for the country’s top ranked junior players.  For the 2018 event, Squash Canada will nominate eight players—four girls and four boys—to represent Team Canada.  The last time that the Pan Am Juniors were held in Brazil, Canada experienced great success with four podium performances, capturing 2 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

The Pan American Junior Squash Championships features the top players who are under 19 years of age as of the completion of the event, from nations within the Caribbean and North, South and Central America.  This event represents a very important competitive opportunity for developing players who aspire to represent Canada in future world events, and also one of cultural diversity which helps players gain experience of competing in foreign environments, against the best junior players in the America’s. Like the Senior Pan American Championships, this event includes a team competition, a singles event and softball doubles, as played on a singles court.

While the Championships is a self-funded event for selected competitors, Squash Canada has already embarked on fundraising activities with intention of limiting some of the expenses for the players.  Squash Canada has already raised enough funds to appoint a Squash Canada Coach who will lead the delegation during the Championships, and to cover Canadian Team uniforms. Approximate total cost per player to fund their participation is $3,000 to $4,000, and subject to variability based primarily on the travel & accommodation costs to the host location.

In the coming weeks, Squash Canada will release the selection criteria by which players will be selected and will include how interested players can apply.  Squash Canada will identify the players eligible for selection very early in the process to give players ample time to fundraise for the opportunity.

Experience the pride of representing your country – be a part of the excitement in 2018 as we prepare to welcome the Pan American nations on Canadian soil in 2019.
