Squash Competition a huge success at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in PEI

And with that, the squash competition at the 2023 Canada Winter Games has come to a close. As a week one sport, squash was held from February 18-25 with the Individual Event from Sunday to Tuesday, while Wednesday through Saturday was the Team Event. Squash was held at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown, PEI.

Provincial and Territorial Teams arrived Friday before competition began, allowing practice time on court, as well as take in some of the unique festivities of the Games such as the Opening Ceremony where all participants, coaches, volunteers, spectators, etc. were warmly welcomed as Islanders.

Sunday afternoon saw the first Individual Event matches get underway, for one of the shortest days of competition, with athletes ranked 9-24 in the knock-out Round of 32. On Monday, athletes seeded 1-8 were introduced to the knock-out Round of 16 to bring the Individual Event down to the top 8 players to compete for 1st through 8th place. The competition continued into Tuesday where the gold medal game for Individual – Female saw twin sisters Ocean and Spring Ma battle it out for Gold and Silver. Ocean Ma (BC) triumphed 3-1 to capturing Gold with Spring Ma (BC) taking home Silver, and the Bronze won by Iman Shaheen (ON). The Individual – Male portion had Quebec teammates Karim Michael and Youssef Sarhan meet in the semifinals where Karim advanced to the gold medal match against Jacob Lin (BC) and Youssef to play Ontario’s Daniel Deverill for Bronze. The final medal position for the Individual – Male was Gold for Jacob Lin (BC), Silver for Karim Michael (QC) and Bronze for Daniel Deverill (ON).

The Male and Female Team Events began Wednesday with four preliminary pools for each category. Once completed, the preliminary pools dispersed teams into the Championship 1-4 Pool, as well as Consolation 5-8 and Consolation 9-12. At this stage, the competition became very competitive with many matches going four or five games to determine a winner, and encounters ending in 2-2 match results with the winner having to be determined by games won. Team BC entered the history books, winning both Male and Female Team Events, adding to their Individual Golds, sweeping the competition. Ontario won Silver in both Male and Female Team categories, as well as Alberta capturing Bronze in both categories.
