(Ottawa, ON)- Some of the top Canadian Junior squash players recently competed in the 68th Scottish Junior Open. The event took place at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland from January 7th to 9th, concluding the players’ European trip. Following their performances at the British Junior Open (January 2nd-6th), the Junior Canadian athletes were ready and eager to bring some medals home to Canada.

Chloe Chemtob, who recently placed 9th at the BJO, was ready to come out on top again, as she did at the U.S. Junior Open. Coming out on top is just what she did! Although the draw was not large, Chemtob, the top seed in the U17 division, remained undefeated in all games and matches. She faced strong competition and will now be bringing home a well deserved gold medal.

The Canadian boys dominated the U15 division at the SJO. Michael Mehl, seeded 3rd overall in the U15 division, was looking to come back from a 19th place finish at the BJO. He dominated all of his games and matches, even defeating fellow Canadian Noel Heaton. This earned him a 1st place finish in the division and a gold medal to bring home. Noel Heaton, seeded 7th overall and the only other Canadian in the U15 division, also dominated many of his matches. He faced intense competitors and had some very close matches (all matches going to 4 games). Heaton only fell short to Mehl on the 2nd day of competition, earning him a 3rd place finish and a bronze medal. This is a great improvement from Heaton’s 42nd place finish at the BJO.

Other Canadians who competed in the event were Boys U19 competitor Jarryd Osborne, Boys U17 competitor Brock Janzer, and Girls U15 competitor Hannah Blatt. Congratulations to every Canadian who participated in both the SJO and BJO. You are all helping distinguish Canada as a country with fierce competitors and a force to be reckoned with on the court.
