The World University Championships opened Monday in Chennai, India. Canada has sent a three-person team consisting of Cameron Seth, James Van Staveren and Alix Younger who will each compete in indivdual competitions as well as the team event.
DAY 1: Monday, September 1, 2014
Alix Younger was on first with a match against 5/8 seed Camilla Tomlinson of Great Britain. After a very competitive match Younger ceded to Tomlinson (3-1)10-12, 11-9, 11-4, 11-8.

DAY 1: Monday, September 1, 2014
Alix Younger was on first with a match against 5/8 seed Camilla Tomlinson of Great Britain. After a very competitive match Younger ceded to Tomlinson (3-1)10-12, 11-9, 11-4, 11-8.
Cameron Seth won his opening match against France's Marc Olivera (3-0) 12-10, 11-8, 11-9. Cameron dropped his second match to 5/8 seed Addeen Idrakie of Malaysia. It was close-fought match, but Seth was unable to consolidate some of his leads and his opponent hit some amazing nick kills, ending in a final score of (0-3) 12-10, 11-8, 11-8.
James Van Staveran won his opening match against India's Maninder Singh Sandhu (3-0) 11-7, 11-8, 11-5. Competing next against the number two seed Zahed Mohammad of Egypt, Van Staveran played a tremendous match with lots of momentum swings. Most games went to points and Van Staveran was in contention throughout, but Mohammed captured the win with (3-1) 11-4 7-11 15-13 11-7.
DAY 2: Tuesday, September 2, 2014
The second day of competition saw Canada’s athletes competing in quick succession and closing the morning with a combined 2-1, giving the athletes an afternoon to rest and recover.
Cameron Seth came out on top in a tight contest against Ullah Rizwan Gul of Pakistan, finishing (3-2) 8-11 11-7 8-11 11-5 11-4.
James Van Stavaren was similarly victorious over Nell Van Der Merwe of South Africa, winning (3-2) 15-13 9-11 11-5 6-11 11-6.
Alix Younger wrapped up the day’s competition for Canada, stealing a set from Gabrielle De Lavison of France, but dropping the match (3-1) 10-12 11-9 11-2 11-8.
DAY 3: Wednesday, September 3, 2014
Each Canadian athlete played one match on the third day of the tournament, ending with a 2-1 combined record.
Cameron Seth faced Ho Wai Yeung of Hong Kong who were tied in games after two, but Yeung took the match winning (3-1) 11-7, 4-11, 11-2, 11-8. Seth will face Ravi Dixit of India on Thursday for 11th place.
James Van Stavaren faced India’s Ravi Dixit, dropping the first game but rallying back to win the next three, taking the match 9-11, 11-6, 14-12, 11-8. James will face Ho Wai Yeung of Hong Kong on Thursday for 9th place.
Alex Younger won a decisive match against Faiza Zafar of Pakiston winning three games straight 11-5, 11-4, 11-6. She will face India’s Sachika Ingale on Thursday for 13th place.
The team competition will begin on Friday for Canada and continue through the weekend.
