Canadian Men’s and Women’s Teams Championships Return After 2-year Hiatus

The 2023 Canadian Men’s and Women’s Teams Championships is set to take place January 20th-22nd at the Regina Squash Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan, after a 2-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the first time since 2018 that the two events will run in tandem at the same venue.

With a draw of seven teams for the men’s side, and four teams for the women’s, this event is bound for some exciting action. Team Ontario will be searching for back-to-back National Team Titles in the women’s division, while the men will be gunning for a third. All the while, teams from Alberta, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Quebec, and Saskatchewan will look to upset the reigning champions.

This year’s Canadian Men’s and Women’s Teams Championships will feature a variety of talented athletes, such as recent 2022 Canadian Junior Open NextGen Silver Medalist Niki Shemirani (World Ranked #300) for Team Ontario, as well as BU19 Bronze Medalist Abbas Nawaz (WR #618) for Team Quebec. Other notable PSA players include Cory McCartney (WR #198) for Team Ontario, Marat Sargsyan (WR #765) for Team Quebec, and Tyson Schille (WR #526) and Brock Janzer (#841) for Team Alberta.

“Our volunteers are enthusiastic and committed to showcasing our Club, our City and our Province for our squash friends from across the Nation,” said Tournament Chair, Thomas King. “The Canadian Men’s and Women’s Team Championships has a tradition of great squash and great fun. Our staff, our volunteers and our club members are keen to maintain that tradition as we host all teams from across Canada at this prestigious national championship. We look forward to seeing you all in the Queen City.”

When asked about his anticipated participation, Cory McCartnery stated: “I’m very excited to captain Team Ontario in my first Canadian Men’s Teams Championship. As squash players, we don’t often get the chance to compete as a team. For this reason, I’m really looking forward to this event and grateful to represent Ontario along with Ben Pitfield and Cameron Butler.”

“Saskatchewan Squash is very excited to be the host province for this year’s Men’s and Women’s Teams Championships! Following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, we are thrilled to be back on the courts and to have the brand-new Regina Squash Centre as the host club for the event, as well as Evolution Fitness Pasqua assisting as the satellite club,” shared Saskatchewan Squash Executive Director, Drew Bilboe. “The anticipation around the tournament is already building and we know the Regina Squash Centre and the City of Regina will be amazing hosts!”
