OTTAWA (ON) – The Canadian Men’s National Squash Team will be playing for 11th place tomorrow at the World Men’s Team Championships in Mulhouse, France, following a Consolation loss today to Pakistan.
OTTAWA (ON) – The Canadian Men’s National Squash Team will be playing for 11th place tomorrow at the World Men’s Team Championships in Mulhouse, France, following a Consolation loss today to Pakistan.
Shawn Delierre of Montreal was the first Canadian to take the court today, taking on Pakistan’s top player Nasir Iqbal. The match was back and forth, Iqbal taking the first game 11-6, and Delierre winning the second 11-7. They split the 3rd and 4th games both 11-6 and forced a deciding 5th. Iqbal proved too strong for Delierre in the final game, winning 11-3 to take the first match for Pakistan.
The next match pitted Andrew Schnell, playing in the number 2 spot, against Pakistan’s Farhan Zaman. This was a battle of the young up-and-comers from each country, aged 21 and 20 respectively. A close match from the start, this also went to five games, with Zaman coming out on top 8-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-5, 11-3 to secure the win for Pakistan.
With that win, Pakistan took the encounter 2-0. The third match featuring Canada's David Letourneau was not played.
Following the loss, Canada moves into the 11th place match to be played tomorrow. They will face the loser of USA/Scotland in their final match of this year’s Championship.
