Canada closed out the 2026 World Squash Masters Championships in Perth, Western Australia, on a high note, with four Canadian players reaching the podium, highlighted by British Columbia’s Gerald Poulton successfully defending his Men’s 80+ title. 

The 2026 World Squash Masters Championships took place from August 30 to September 6, bringing together more than 900 athletes from around the world across 21 age categories. Among the competitors were 29 dedicated Canadians who proudly represented the Maple Leaf. 

Canada finished the championships with four medals, one gold, one silver and two bronze. 

Leading the way was Gerald “Gerry” Poulton, who captured his second consecutive Men’s 80+ gold medal. He first claimed the world title at the 2024 World Squash Masters Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In Perth, his road to the final included a thrilling all-Canadian semifinal against second seed Howard Armitage, before Gerry went on to secure the championship title in a four-game final. 

“Defending a title is always much more difficult to me, as there is much more pressure both from yourself but also from the expectations of others. It was particularly satisfying this year as both the semi and final went the full five games and could really have gone either way.” Gerry shared.

Looking ahead, Gerry is already eyeing the 2028 Championship in South Africa.  

In the Women’s 65+, Ontario’s Kathryn “Kathy” Cowper put together a strong campaign in Perth, improving on her previous best result at the 2024 World Squash Masters Championships. Cowper finished with a silver medal this time around, adding another Canadian podium finish to the country’s successful week in Australia. 

“Great to find out where you stand in the world of squash players of the same age,” she shared. 

Looking ahead to the next World Squash Masters Championships in South Africa, Kathy is taking things one step at a time. “I trained hard both on and off the court for this one so I’m ready for a rest at the moment.” 

Rounding out Canada’s four-medal performance were Howard Armitage of Ontario and Kelsey Souchereau of Alberta, who each earned bronze medals in the Men’s 80+ and Women’s 55+ categories, respectively. 

In 2024, Kelsey had every intention of competing in Amsterdam, however, fell ill days before the tournament and was unable to compete. Which meant that this trip to Australia was packed with high hopes.  

“I knew that this competition would be a particularly tough draw because back in the day, the Australians were dominating the squash scene,” Kelsey shared. 

“I am leaving happy that I accomplished my goal, and yes there are already thoughts of the next championships in 2028 in South Africa!” 

Canada’s strong showing in Perth continues a proud tradition of Canadian success at the World Squash Masters Championships. Congratulations to all 29 Canadians who represented the Maple Leaf on the world stage and to everyone who competed at this year’s championships.
