OTTAWA (ON) – Squash Canada announced today that the Federal Government of Canada has committed to support Squash Canada’s Centre of Excellence (COE) strategy with a $50,000 commitment to high performance development in Canada.

Squash Canada President, Lolly Gillen said, “we are very grateful for the on-going support of the Federal Government through the Department of Canadian Heritage, Sport Canada in making this strategic financial investment in the Canadian High Performance system. Out staff continues to work diligently hard to ensure the success of our National Team athletes and the “Centre of Excellence” program ”.

The funding will be used to support the on-going training expenses at the National COE – Toronto program as well as to provide coaching support to national team athletes based in Calgary and Montreal.  Additional funds have also been committed towards creating a new National Junior Development Camp structure which will see Squash Canada’s Performance Director conduct provincial and regional camps and club visits across Canada.

Squash Canada Executive Director, Danny Da Costa said, “we recognize the difficulties we face as a country to get all of our athletes involved in a centralized environment, so this funding will allow Squash Canada to support our athletes outwardly, by having Squash Canada’s Performance Director visit major squash hubs in Canada to work with emerging and talented athletes”.

The funding will now see Squash Canada’s Performance Director work more closely with top junior and national team athletes in Canada as he travels across Canada evaluating players and supporting coaches and athletes through Squash Canada’s twelve Provincial/Territorial Squash Associations.

In 2011, Squash Canada hired Former Malaysian National Coach Jamie Hickox to lead Squash Canada’s High Performance Program.  Hickox, works out of Squash Canada’s National Centre of Excellence which is located at the National Squash Academy in Downsview Park.

Squash Canada will end its ninety-ninth year as an organization by hosting the 2014 Women’s World Team Squash Championships at White Oaks Conference Resort & Spa in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON from December 1 – 6, 2014.
