Nimes, France – Team Canada was defeated by Team France today in the consolation draw of the Women’s World Team Squash Championship. Coming off a 3-0 sweep of the Czech Republic Thursday, the Canadians had the tables turned on them as the French Squad were too much to handle, winning three matches to zero.
World #33 Sam Cornett of Ottawa was in tough to start the day, as she was up against the #14 ranked player in the world, Camille Serme. Cornett got off to a strong start by taking the first game 11-7; however the next game saw the momentum shift, as Serme won 11-5. The Frenchwoman was simply too much to handle from then on, winning the best-of-five match, three games to one (7-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8).
In the 2nd match, Canada would once again fail to capitalize on an early lead. Susie King of Calgary took the first two games by identical 12-10 margins; but her opponent Laura Pomportes battled back to win the last three games and the match (10-12, 10-12, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8). With France holding an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the tie, France’s Coline Aumard dismissed Montreal’s Alex Norman in a 3rd match that carried no weight.
Executive Director of Squash Canada Danny Dacosta is proud of the effort the women put forth. “This was the first world championship for Susie, and only the 2nd for Sam, Alex, and Steph (Steph Edmison, of Toronto). This experience will be invaluable for the girls going forward and with the next Women’s World Team Championship coming to Canada in 2014, the squad will be well prepared to represent Canada on home soil.
Canada will now complete its tournament by playing in the 11th/12th classification match on Saturday against the loser of South Africa – Netherlands. Those wishing to follow the matches can do so online at: http://www.worldwomensquash-nimes2012.fr/le-multimedia/streaming-direct/
