After a 50-minute, five game opening match, Cornett moved onto the quarter-finals to face Maria Toorpakai Wazir (PAK). Cornett continued where she left off the night before; with her assertive play, she pulled through in 3 straight games to take the match 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 12-10).
Next up for Cornett was 3rd seed Samantha Teran (MEX) last night in the semi-finals. Cornett played with an air of confidence and assertiveness that lead her to a 3-1 victory (8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-4), cementing her spot in the finals.
From reports by event organizer Jess DiMauro, Cornett had this to say about her semi-final match up and preparation for the finals “It was such a pleasure playing Samantha [Teran]. I knew, going in, that it was going to be a long one. I stuck to my game plan really well in the end and played very assertive and confident squash. I hope to carry that through to my match with Millie tomorrow.”
After knocking the number 2 and 3 seeds out, Cornett faces #4 seed and world ranked #39 Millie Tomlinson (ENG) in today’s finals, scheduled to start at 6:30pm EDT.
The Slaight Music Granite Open 2016 marks the 13th PSA World Tour final for both athletes and Cornett’s first final on her home court.
