Squash Canada is pleased to announce that a Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games legacy has been converted to a legacy fund in support of high performance.
The funds were obtained from the sale of the ASB ShowGlassCourt™, a four wall-glass court which easily converts from a singles court to a softball doubles court, to the Seattle Athletic Club in Seattle, Washington.
The court was used during the 2014 Commonwealth Games (Glasgow), the 2014 Women’s World Team Championships (Niagara-on-the Lake, ON), and most recently the 2015 Pan Am Games (Toronto). It was gifted to Squash Canada by Toronto 2015 and Sport Canada as a high performance legacy. Originally earmarked for the defunct National Squash Academy (Toronto), the court has been in storage since July 2015.
“Squash Canada actively sought out options of housing the court on Canadian soil and we extend our sincere appreciation to those clubs who endeavoured to make this happen”, said Lolly Gillen, President of Squash Canada. “We believe the proceeds from the sale can significantly improve our targeted objectives in achieving world class excellence.
We genuinely believe the Seattle Athletic Club has afforded us a terrific opportunity that will allow Squash Canada to develop a substantial legacy alternative.”
Both Toronto 2015 and Sport Canada have endorsed the initiative to convert the legacy court from equipment to financial support for high performance programming in Canada.
New owner’s CEO, Mustaq Pirani, expressed excitement for squash. “The Seattle Athletic Club, a Canadian owned Company based out of Vancouver, B.C., is thrilled and proud to acquire the Toronto2015 Show court from Squash Canada. The court will be permanently installed at the Seattle Athletic Club facilities in downtown Seattle. We expect the installation to be completed by January 15th 2017.
As patrons and supporters of squash, it is our honor and privilege to extend an open invitation to Squash Canada and the players on your National teams – junior and senior, to train and practice on this championship court whenever required. We look forward to a special relationship with Squash Canada, and to receiving and hosting your National players in Seattle.”
Squash Canada has engaged a special High Performance Task Force to review and propose best possible usage of the funds with a report expected by early December for Board consideration.
