2019 Pan American Junior Squash Championships Starts Today!

OTTAWA, ON, June 16, 2019 — The 2019 Pan American Junior Squash Championships begins today at the Mayfair Lakeshore Racquet Club in Toronto, Ontario going until Saturday June 22, 2019. This will be the first time in history that Canada has the honour of hosting the prestigious event.

Many top junior squash players under 19 years of age from North, South and Central America as well as the Caribbean will compete. There are 78 athletes (35 girls and 43 boys), representing 12 countries: Argentina, Barbados, Bermuda, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grand Cayman, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru and the United States.

There are several opportunities for players to compete with seven categories that include: boy’s and girl’s individual events, boy’s and girl’s team competition and boy’s, girl’s and mixed doubles.

The event will feature both singles and doubles starting today that go until Wednesday June 19th, as well as kick off Sunday evening with an Opening Ceremony. The team competition will then close out the tournament from Wednesday June 19th to Saturday June 22nd and bring out the patriotic spirit of the participating countries.

Athletes from the across the Americas trickled into Mayfair Lakeshore Club throughout the day, scoping out their battlefield. “Despite their questions about where they can see the Toronto Raptors celebration parade on Monday, judging by the intensity of practice day our visiting players are very focused on these Championships,” said Dan Wolfenden, Squash Canada Executive Director. “All teams came through Mayfair Lakeshore for practice sessions today, and you could see the excitement through the registration process and touring the great facility, but once they stepped on court, they were all business.”

Toronto 2019 will also mark the first time in the history of the Pan Am Junior Squash Championships that a host country will include a companion event – the “Slaight Music International Junior Squash Showcase”. This event will feature Canada’s top U17 boys and girls and allows the losers of the first round of the Pan Am Juniors Individual draws to be fed into the companion draw for additional matches.

This will be a fantastic opportunity for our talented U17 juniors to gain experience playing International athletes. Jeff Deverill has been tasked with organizing the companion event, and is feeling optimistic about the future of companion events at Pan Am Junior Championships. “I am honoured to be selected by Lolly Gillen, Tournament Chair of the Pan Am Junior Championships in Toronto to act as Chair of the Slaight Music International Junior Squash Showcase at Mayfair Lakeshore in Toronto,” said Jeff. “This event will allow 17 of our high performing Canadian junior squash athletes an opportunity to gain valuable international exposure and hopefully win a medal on home soil. Thank you, Lolly, for putting forward this brilliant idea and hopefully, this event will become a permanent fixture in future Pan Am Junior Championships.”

The matches on Court 1 and Court 2 will be livestreamed throughout the week, thanks to audio visual director, Josh Ginou, and can be viewed at www.squashstream.net
