OTTAWA, ON (June 11, 2020) — Call it optimism, we call it work behind the scenes to create the possibility for Canadian players to compete in their beloved national championships, but only if participation can be safely so.
Squash Canada has made tentative plans to re-schedule most of the different 2020 Canadian Championships that were scheduled in April and May, but were postponed due to the pandemic. See below for the provisional dates and locations.
Provisional means that they will be held only if COVID-19 safety concerns and related restrictions have been sufficiently removed so as to make the event feasible, and that there will have been a reasonable number of weeks leading up to the event when players were able to get on their home squash courts to train and prepare. That would mean that provincial borders would have to be open to travelers without self-isolation requirements, and squash facilities must be fully authorized to open and permitted to have larger gatherings of people who are not required to maintain physical distancing at all times.
It may be a stretch, but thanks to some planning and amazing host clubs, we’re putting it out there so you can circle it, in pencil, in your calendars, and then monitor how the pandemic evolves through the summer.
The intent would be to announce a minimum of 60 days prior to the event whether the ‘all clear’ sign has been given by the respective public health authority, and that the event is confirmed as a ‘GO’ by Squash Canada. Registration won’t be open until then, and it is recommended that only refundable flights and accommodation reservations be made, or those that can be canceled without penalty.
As to categories that have age eligibility requirements, the intent would be to run age categories as at the date of the originally scheduled championship so as to not cause any player to lose a year of eligibility in a given category.
If these events cannot be safely held on these provisional dates, the intent would be to outright cancel those 2020 Championships, and focus on plans for the 2021 edition of the events.
