Squash Canada update on 2021 Canadian Championships

OTTAWA (November 5, 2020) — Squash Canada optimistically sets provisional dates and locations for several Canadian Championships in 2021 and provides an update on the entire 2021 championship schedule.

“Going forward, it is important to understand that everything remains provisional and fluid with respect to dates/locations as we navigate the next several months of a COVID impacted sport environment”, said Dan Wolfenden, Squash Canada Executive Director.  “We are working hard to be ready with a contingent event plan should the circumstances permit us to safely host 2021 National Championships for the benefit of our playing membership, and indeed as a part of Canada’s recovery.”

In late Summer 2020, Squash Canada conducted a national survey on the concept of extending the 2021 National Championship season as a potential strategy to help players enjoy more of a competitive season than if the events were held in their normal timeframe. While it may appear to be optimistic and the full 2021 National Championships schedule is still somewhat fluid, Squash Canada continues to work to provide you event dates/locations that can be circled on your calendars.

Squash Canada has awarded three events to The Club at White Oaks in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario:

  • Canadian Squash Championships – June 15-20, 2021
  • Canadian U23 Squash Championships – June 18-20, 2021
  • Canadian Junior Open – July 2-6, 2021

The above events are only possible with the continued support of a terrific host.

“White Oaks is looking forward to June and July with the expectation that we can return to competition again on our squash courts. It has been a long, difficult period of time for all of the squash community since March of 2020. We have had to show a lot of patience and we are hopeful that public health restrictions will allow us to return to regular play in 2021”, said Matt Easingwood, The Club at White Oaks Racquets Director. “I do feel confident that by June 2021, Canadians will be in a position to participate in National Squash Championships. Our wonderful facility will be ready to go and the White Oaks squash department staff and volunteers will be eager to see everyone again. We have so many close friends in the squash community and we look forward to meeting again in June and July!”

While a location is not yet confirmed, Squash Canada has targeted different dates for a 2021 Canadian Junior Championships – May 21-24, 2021 (Victoria Day weekend).

The status of the remaining events is still to be determined but we do provide the following update below:

  • Canadian Men’s and Women’s Team Championships – on hold, traditional timeframe of February 19-21 makes highly unlikely
  • Canadian University and College Championships – on hold, USports cancellation of Winter sports makes questionable
  • Canadian Masters Teams Championships – moves from usual January timeframe to a targeted date of April 16-18, 2021
  • Canadian Doubles Championships – TBA
  • Canadian Mixed Doubles Championships – TBA

Squash Canada is proud of our rich history in hosting a broad range of National Championships across Canada and looks forward to the time when the Canadian squash community can once again gather and share in the friendship and spirit of great competition.  For more information on all Squash Canada’s National Championships, please visit: https://squash.ca/canadian-championships/
