The 2022 Canadian University and College Squash Championships were a huge success this past weekend (March 25-27) where 30 of the best post-secondary squash players from across Canada converged at Glendon College in Toronto, Ontario. The 2022 champions were crowned with Sam Cornett and Mike McCue capturing the Open Titles.
In the Women’s Open division, heavy favourite Sam Cornett of Laurentian University added to her collection of various National Titles. She dominated the field of seven players to win the Women’s Open category and the title of Canadian University and College Women’s Champion. “The Canadian University and College Championships was a great event. I really enjoyed the atmosphere,” said Sam Cornett. “I played well, loved playing and enjoyed watching many really tight matches.” It was never really close throughout the weekend as Cornett won her matches by 3-0 scores proving that she is a legend in the sport of squash in this country no matter when and where she takes to the court.
Rounding out the Women’s Open draw, Anika Alexander of Red River College captured Silver after a great 3-1 win over Anika Kurji of McGill University. Kurji took home bronze with a solid performance against roommate Jasmine Boucley of McGill University.
In the Men’s Open Division, it was Mike McCue (University of Toronto), who came out on top capturing the title of Canadian University and College Men’s Champion. McCue’s talent and experience on the PSA tour saw him cruise through the tournament without dropping a game. In the final, Maximilien Godbout (McGill University) put up a great fight against McCue with his excellent retrieval and steady play. In the end Godbout took home the Silver and Matt Bicknell of McGill University won the Bronze. “It’s a great feeling to win the Canadian University title for the first time. It was fantastic seeing players from all around the country competing in a variety of divisions this weekend, and I hope this event continues to grow in size,” said Men’s Open Champion McCue. “There are so many strong players across Canada currently enrolled in post-secondary programs, and this tournament should be a priority every year.”
In addition, the event held a Women’s B, Men’s A, and Men’s B draw. There was high-level squash throughout the weekend and after many grueling matches, the following winners were crowned in their respective divisions – congratulations to Pujita Verma (Western University) in Women’s B, Jia Shen Lokman (Queens University) in Men’s A and Nicholas Laporte (Concordia University) in Men’s B.
