Who will earn a place on Team Canada?
Starting Tuesday, 10 of Canada’s top squash players will hit the courts in Moncton, NB as Squash Moncton hosts the 2017 Canadian World Doubles Team Selection Trial.
Over the next three days, athletes will play in over 28 matches in different combinations in hopes of earning a spot on the two men and two women Team Canada roster. The selected Team Canada squad will then shift into high gear as they prepare to compete at the World Doubles Squash Championship in Manchester, England August 1 to 5, 2017. Not only is a world title on the line, but a top 5 finish in Manchester would earn a Canadian berth in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The team selection trial is designed to give coaches and selectors the opportunity to observe players’ ability to adapt to different partners and to demonstrate their effectiveness in both the men or women doubles’ categories as well as in mixed doubles.
Set to go on the men’s side are 2015 Pan Am Games doubles silver medalists, brothers Andrew and Graeme Schnell from Calgary, Montreal’s Shawn De Lierre 2015 Pan Am Men’s Team Gold medalist and a former multi-year Canadian Men’s Champion and David Baillargeon, and 2017 Canadian Squash Men’s Champion Nick Sachvie (St. Catharines) and 2017 finalist Mike McCue (Toronto). The women’s side has no shortage of talent and experience as two-time Canadian Women’s Champion Hollie Naughton (Toronto) and two-time Canadian Women's finalist Danielle Letourneau (Calgary) will be on hand, along with Canada’s highest PSA ranked player, Sam Cornett (Toronto). Naughton, Letourneau and Cornett will be joined by doubles specialist Regina’s Nikki Todd, two-time 2015 Pan Am Games silver medalist (Women’s Doubles and Women’s Team events).
