Canada loses the deciding match against #5 seed New Zealand at the World Team Squash Championships

     

                       

    OTTAWA (ON) – New Zealand has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Team Squash Championships in Nimes, France after defeating Team Canada in a closely contested Rd of 16 match 2-1.   The fifth seeded New Zealand features Joelle King, the World #5 player, Jaclyn Hawkes (#19), Kylie Lindsay (#34) and Amanda Landers-Murphy (#42). New Zealand finished 4th at the previous World Team Championships in 2010.

     

                       

    OTTAWA (ON) – New Zealand has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Team Squash Championships in Nimes, France after defeating Team Canada in a closely contested Rd of 16 match 2-1.   The fifth seeded New Zealand features Joelle King, the World #5 player, Jaclyn Hawkes (#19), Kylie Lindsay (#34) and Amanda Landers-Murphy (#42). New Zealand finished 4th at the previous World Team Championships in 2010.

    Calgary’s Susie King got Canada off to a great start defeating World #34 Kylie Lindsay with a 3-2 victory (11-8, 7-11, 10-12, 11-7, 14-12).  King, 25, competing for Canada in her first World Team Championships, fought from 2-1 deficit and saved two match balls to capture the first match for Canada. New Zealand leveled the match 1 – 1 when Joelle King defeated Ottawa’s Samantha Cornett 3-1 (8-11, 11-6, 11-2, 11-3).  Cornett captured the first game against Joelle King, however the New Zealander used her experience and took the Canadian in 4 games.  The final match saw Montreal’s Alex Norman take on Jaclyn Hawkes.  All of the games were closely contested, though Jaclyn Hawkes won the match 3-0 (11-5, 13-11, 11-9). 

    Canada will now play in the consolation round to determine 9th through 16th placing’s.  Canada will take on the Czech Republic on Thursday at 4:30 pm local time.  The Czech Republic features Lucie Fialova (World #43), Olga Ertlova (World #50), Kristyna Alexova (World #226) and Anna Klimundova (Unranked).

    Canada will host the next Women’s World Team Squash Championships in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario from December 1 – 5, 2014.
