OTTAWA, (ON) – Team Canada finished the 2013 World Mens Team Championships with a 2-0 win over their neighbours to the south, the United States, to take 11th place.
David Letourneau, playing in the third position, took the court first for Canada against well-known American Gilly Lane. Lane opened the match with a 11-8 win, before Letourneau took two straight games 11-4. Lane battled back to win the fourth 11-9, forcing the deciding game which Letourneau won 11-9. It was a close match, and Letourneau was very pleased to pull out the win against the former Top-50 player.

With Canada up 1-0, Shawn Delierre took to the court against Julian Illingworth. Delierre, ranked 40th in the World, was looking to get the best of close competitor Illingworth, who holds the World 39th ranking. A close game with extra points started off this match, with Delierre coming out on too 12-10. Illingworth took the second 11-6, before Delierre finished him off 11-6,11-6. This gave the 3-1 win to Delierre and the 2-0 win to Canada.
Canada was ranked 15th coming into the event, to the United States tournament ranking of 11th. A small indicator of success, Canada is happy to have finished higher than their ranking and beat out some of the higher seeded teams.
Team Canada was comprised of Shawn Delierre from Mntreal, Toronto’s Dane Sharp, and Andrew Schnell and David Letourneau, both of Calgary. They were supported by coach Yvon Provençal of Montreal and team therapist Jim Mylonas of Toronto. Congratulations to the entire team on a great week of squash!
