Cornett wins Squash Player’s Player of the Month award

Canada’s Samantha Cornett has been named Squash Player’s Female Player of the Month for March after her best performance in a World Series event for three years and winning the $10,000 Winnipeg Winter Club Open in February.

The 26-year-old sixth seed was the first homegrown player to win the Winnipeg event and she followed up that triumph by reaching the second round of the $150,000 Windy City Open as a qualifier.

Cornett beat Australia’s Sarah Cardwell 3/1 and France’s Coline Aumard 3/1 in the qualifying rounds, before stunning ninth-seeded New Zealander Joelle King 3/1 in the first round.

Cornett, who lost 3/0 to England’s Laura Massaro in round two, said on Facebook: “Great run at the Windy City Open making the last 16, but I came up short against Laura Massaro. Pleased with some progress I've made and stoked for the next chunk of tournaments.”

Her next event is the $15,000 Calgary Open in her home country, beginning on March 9, when she will be hoping to continue her climb back up the world rankings. This week she returned to the world’s top 50 for the first time since February 2016, to 44th. She achieved her career-best ranking of 28 in May 2014.
