OTTAWA, ON, May 30, 2019 – The 2019 Canadian U23 Squash Championships returns for a second year with 35 of Canada’s best rising stars set to battle for the National Title. The event will run from May 31st to June 2nd at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club in Toronto, Ontario that features a Men’s and Women’s U23 Open category.
OTTAWA, ON, May 30, 2019 – The 2019 Canadian U23 Squash Championships returns for a second year with 35 of Canada’s best rising stars set to battle for the National Title. The event will run from May 31st to June 2nd at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club in Toronto, Ontario that features a Men’s and Women’s U23 Open category.
For many participating, this Championship fills an identified gap within the Canadian squash player’s development pathway serving as another competitive opportunity. For some this event will act as a tune-up for future events this Summer such as Pan Am Juniors or Worlds and for others it allows them to stay involved in the competitive squash scene.
On the men’s side, 2018 medalists George Crowne and David Mill are set to return to try and capture the 2019 Canadian Championship. Last year, George came into the event seeded 5/8, then secured a spot in the finals, where he lost a tight match to the number 1 seed, David Baillargeon. After a successful season, George enters the men's open draw this year as the top seed. In addition, David Mill also finished above his 5/8 seeding at the 2018 event, defeating top players to take the bronze medal. Having had a year to strengthen his game, David will be aiming for gold at the 2019 U23 Squash Championships. Other players to watch for include number two seed Julien Gosset as well as 3/4 seeds Liam Marrison and Mohanad Hekal, who is coming in as the reigning 2019 Canadian University and College Squash Champion.
In the women's open draw, Nicole Kendall, who captured a bronze medal at the 2018 U23 Squash Championships, is this year's player to beat. Nicole is a past Canadian Junior Champion and has spent the past two years on the roster of the women's varsity squash team at Columbia University. Other players to watch for include number two seed Brianna Jefferson as well as 3/4 seeds Erica McGillicuddy and Sydney Maxwell.
