Toronto, Ontario (March, 7th, 2013) – The University of Calgary’s Graeme Schnell claimed his 5th Men’s Open title at the 2013 Black Knight Canadian University and College Championships at the University of Toronto on Sunday. With his 5th victory, Schnell passes the University of Western’s Rob Nigro for the most titles in the history of the Canadian University and College Championships.
The top seeded Schnell captured the title by rallying past the third seed Cameron Seth in the finals; after losing the first game, his first dropped game of the tournament, Schnell won the next three to claim victory 7-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8. Schnell’s 2013 title follows victories in the 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012 editions of the event. Nigro won his four titles by claiming four straight championships from 2002-2005.
On the women’s side, the tournament’s top seed was once again successful, as Waterloo University’s Micaala Seth captured the Women’s Open title. The 2010 champion, Seth returned to the winner’s circle behind a dominating performance that did not see her drop a single game over the course of the tournament. The final was no cakewalk however, as number two seed Jaycee Spagrud battled Seth for three tough games, before finally succumbing 11-5, 11-8, 16-14.
Players at the Canadian University and College Championships compete across several divisions, based on the player’s skill level. The Men’s and Women’s Open category is the top level and their winners serve as overall champions for the event. The final results as follows:
