Ottawa (ON) – Team Ontario has been named the top seed in three of the four squash events at next week’s 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, BC.
In the Men’s Team Competition, Ontario will hope to ride that number one seed back to the top of the podium and defend their gold medal from the 2011 Games in Halifax. Alberta, BC and Quebec round out the top four Men’s seeds.
Ontario is also seeded first in the Women’s Team event, and will look to improve on their 2011 Silver Medal. They will have to fend off the defending Champions and hosts Team British Columbia, who are seeded second for the Women, followed by Alberta and Manitoba.
Ontario also boasts a top seed in Sophie Mehta as part of the Women’s Individual draw, a new component added to this year’s competition. Both Men and Women will compete in separate draws of 16 to start the competition, a way to increase competitive matches and provide podium potential to more Provinces and Territories.
Quebec’s David Baillargeon, the defending Canadian Junior Championships and Canadian Junior Open Champion, has the top seed in the Men’s Individual event, with Ontario’s Carter Robitaille seeded second.
The Canada Winter Games is held every two years, alternating between Summer and Winter Games. A collaboration of youth, sport, culture and community, the Canada Games is Canada’s largest multi-sport competition for young athletes. First held in 1967 in Quebec City, Canada Games showcases our country’s next generation of national, international, and Olympic Champions.
