OTTAWA, ON – Squash Canada, as a member of Canadian Olympic Committee, Pan-American Federation, and World Squash Federation, would like to proudly share the official declaration of the Year of Sport in Canada. The Canadian Olympic Committee’s Chief Executive Officer Chris Overholt, Governor General of Canada, His Excellency the right Honorourable David Johnston, and the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport) jointly proclaimed 2015 to be the Year of Sport in Canada.

The Year of Sport cements the importance and the popularity of Sport in Canada. Throughout the year, Canada will host a number of world championship events: World Junior Hockey Championship, Canada Winter Games, Ford Men’s World Curling Championships, FIFA Women’s World Cup, and 2015 Pan and ParaPan-American Games. Over 50 different nations will be competing in over 50 sports on Canadian soil during the course of 2015. Additional initiatives and events planned in 2015 will showcase the benefits and values of sport.
As a preview to the 2015 Year of Sport, Squash Canada will host Shop.CA Women’s World Team Squash Championship in December 2014. Over the course of seven days, there will be over 100 matches of Squash played between 20 nations from six continents. The Women World Team Championship is the largest squash event ever held in Canada and intends to break ground for the incoming Year of Sport. Squash’s presence will continue to play a prominent role in the Year of Sport by its participation at both the Canada Winter Games and Pan-American Games.
