Stoneburgh and Hewitt Join Forces to Win Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship

    Toronto, Ontario (March, 7th, 2013) –Stephanie Hewitt and partner Scott Stoneburgh teamed together to capture the 2013 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship at the Toronto Lawn and Tennis Club on Sunday. This is the first Canadian Mixed Doubles title as a pair for Stoneburgh and Hewitt.

    Toronto, Ontario (March, 7th, 2013) –Stephanie Hewitt and partner Scott Stoneburgh teamed together to capture the 2013 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship at the Toronto Lawn and Tennis Club on Sunday. This is the first Canadian Mixed Doubles title as a pair for Stoneburgh and Hewitt.

    Sunday’s win marked Stoneburgh’s first time winning the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship overall; while Hewitt continued to keep adding to an already impressive resume; this is her 5th Canadian Mixed Doubles title, and her 4th in the last 5 years.  Hewitt won her first championship in 2004 partnering with Scott Dulmage. In 2009, Hewitt would pair with James Hewitt and begin a run of three straight championships, before returning to the winner’s circle again this year with Stoneburgh after a one year absence.

    Hewitt of the Toronto Cricket, Skating, and Curling Club and Stoneburgh of the Toronto Racquet’s Club faced stiff opposition from Dana Betts and David Letourneau in the final but were able to overcome the challengers in four games, 14-16, 16-14, 11–6, 13-11.

    In other action at the Championships, Lolly Gillen and Jay Gillespie won their 3rd consecutive 55+ championship by defeating Lindsey Hermer-Bell and Paul Smith, 16-14, 14-16, 11-8, 11-9. In the 50+ category, Leslie Freeman and Jim Paton were denied a third straight title as they were defeated by Jann Taylor and Alan Hunt, 13-11, 7-5, 7-5.  Jean DeMarco and Brian Murray defeated Anne Smith and Molson Robertson, 11-4, 11-9, 14-12 to win the the 60+ category for the 2nd consecutive year. The 40+ category saw Robbin Morrison and Rob Wheeler claim their first title by outlasting Tammie Sangster and James Hewitt, 8-11, 14-12, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8.

    ·         Over 50: Jann Taylor and Alan Hunt

    ·         Over 55: Lolly Gillen and Jay Gillespie

    ·         Over 60: Jean DeMarco and Brian Murray

    ·         Mixed B: Sally Philp and Chris Dinsdale
