World #3 Diego Elias of Peru confirmed his top-seeded status by defeating Egypt’s Mazen Hesham 3 games to 1 in a thrilling championship match at the 2024 Canadian Men’s Open presented by AirSprint Private Aviation. Hesham staged a valiant comeback after dropping the first two games, but Elias held strong at the end of a brutal fourth game to claim his second PSA World Tour title of 2024. In his victory speech, Elias said “The crowd has been amazing. Here in Canada, they love the sport and they support us every day. Every day it’s been full and thank you everyone for coming all week!”
The exciting final was the culmination of a brilliant week of squash on the all-glass Power Court presented by Syra in the spectacular Bow Valley Square. Packed crowds were in awe of the skill and physicality on display from the opening day through to the final. Highlights included Canada’s David Baillargeon (QC) notching a first-ever win over Ryunosuke Tsukue to reach the quarterfinals, and the Cinderella run of Hungarian Farkas Balazs to the semis.
Since being revived in 2022, the Canadian Open has grown each year thanks to generous support from AirSprint Private Aviation, Oxford Properties, and the Bow Valley Athletic Club. Furthermore, the event’s many sponsors and grants from the Government of Canada and Tourism Calgary help to secure the event and the many activities that surround it.
We now look ahead to the Canadian Women’s Open, a Silver PSA World Tour event in October 2024. Stay tuned for the details, coming this summer!
